The Ryder Cup Venue 2014
As well as being the chosen venue for the Ryder Cup 2014, Gleneagles Golf Resort has three outstanding, but very different golf courses. The PGA Centenary, The King's Course, and one of Scotland's favourite hidden gems, The Queen's Course. The PGA Centenary Course will privide a fantastic venue for the Ryder Cup not only for its golf, but its amphitheatre layout will make for fantastic spectator viewing.
The PGA Centenary Course
The PGA Centenary Course, the host course for the 2014 Ryder Cup, was created by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus. The course is a modern classic set in the heart of Scotland's beautiful Perthshire countryside. The PGA Centenary is a challenge that is enjoyable, offersing a feast of views of the spectacular countryside in which Gleneagles is set. Putting on the two-tier second green, you are distracted by the lush panorama of the rich Perthshire straths. As you move westwards over the next few holes, the rugged Grampians come into view on the right, then distantly purple ahead, Ben Vorlich and the mountains above the Trossachs.
Straight from the 1st tee you will come across the clever design that has been shaped round the natural landscape. Be bold and brave, and the rewards are enormous, but if accuracy is not in your golf bag a more relaxed course management approach will allow to finish with a good scorecard. Take up the challenge to see how well you can perform before the European and US greats battle it out for golf's greatest trophy.
The King's Course
The James Braid designed King's Course, opened in 1919, is a masterpiece of design, which has tested the aristocracy of golf, both professional and amateur. Club selection is the secret on the King's. It is certainly one of the most beautiful and exhilarating places to play golf in the world, with the springy moorland turf underfoot, the sweeping views from the tees all around, the rock-faced mountains to the north, the green hills to the south, and the peaks of the Trossachs and Ben Vorlich on the western horizon.
Heading home down the 17th, "Warslin' Lea" (Wrestling Ground), the name reflects the difficulty so many golfers have had with this long, sweeping par 4.
The Queen's Course
It may well be the shortest of the three courses, but the beautiful settings of the Queen's Course and the challenge of its golf has attracted such top golfers as Johnny Miller, Greg Norman, Seve Ballesteros, Tom Watson, and Lee Trevino, as well as great names from the entertainment and sports worlds including Sean Connery, Burt Lancaster, Bing Crosby, Jackie Stewart, and astronaut Alan Shepard (the only man to hit a golf shot on the moon).
One thing is for sure, you will walk away from the 18th green with great satisfaction that you played a golf course that is a real pleasure to play.
